Misconceptions About Haiti

“That is actually in Haiti!” “You don’t look Haitian!” These are sayings we Haitian people hear all the time when we tell people we are Haitian or show beautiful images of Haiti. People are so use to seeing poor and damaged places in Haiti that it is hard for them to believe that there are nice places in Haiti. People are so use to seeing Haitians looking malnourished on the news or bump into multiple dark skin Haitians in public that it is hard for them to believe a light skinned or a gorgeous person say they are Haitian. The media never say anything positive about Haiti. Haiti is mostly shown on television for political turmoil, violence poverty or natural disasters.  These concepts make Haiti be portrayed as a country that is slum filled, dirty, ugly, have no activities, but has hardships and where people look thin, unhealthy and unattractive.

Although the concepts said above do exist in Haiti, but only exist in some parts of Haiti. There are other parts in Haiti that are in good condition and appear nicely presented. Haiti is filled with precious treasures. Haiti has big office buildings, hotels and resorts, mansions, bridges, playgrounds, public parks and many more. In Haiti people can have fun and hang out where they can go dining, shopping and go to parties and parades. Second, take tours at museums and historical sites that resemble Haiti’s history. Finally, take a glance at statues of famous Haitian people who are studied and learned about in Haiti’s history. In Haiti people can play sports such as swimming, jet skiing, surfing, roller blading, motorcycling and horseback riding and play soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

Haiti is a mix nation. There are dark skinned black Haitians as well as light skinned black Haitians. In fact, Haiti has a whole variety of different shades of black that Haitian people come out to be. Not only are there black Haitians, there are white Haitians too in Haiti. Haiti is a nation that has blacks, malatoos and whites. If you are Haitian, you are automatically mixed because in Haiti’s history during the 1700s; Native Americans, slaves from Africa and the Caucasian French slave owners were living in Haiti. All these racial groups living in the same island makes Haitian people today mix. Today, Haiti has Haitians who have African, European, Spanish and Arabic descent and that is why it is a mix nation.
